My curiosity with the world of medicine and energy started long before I had any professional training in it. I 'knew' there was more to what meets the eye, but I couldn't explain what 'that' was. It was obvious early on in my childhood that one of my roles is to help others in need and now within the roles that I play as a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend and healer, caring for others occurs naturally and with joy. Most of the time anyway!
I have been very fortunate to have lived in six different countries by the time I was 14 years old, and travelled to another handful of countries in the meantime, experiencing different cultures, religions, lifestyle, cuisines and medicine. This was due to my expatriate lifestyle as a child and the exposure I received, unappreciated at the time when moving schools over and over again, showed me that change is the only constant there is. I observed a wide variety of the ways people lived, ate and what they believed in. Travel also sparked my interest in natural medicine. I was witness to ''alternative therapies'', being used in hospitals for all conditions, first and foremost. It was normal for me to see garden plants and herbs, massage, reiki, homeopathy, aromatherapy, acupuncture and prayers being used when someone was unwell. I also come from a long line of healers in my family of dentists, doctors and homeopaths as far as I know.
In 1997 I moved to London after finishing my higher education. Whilst at boarding school for the previous 4 years I started to experience a long line of health issues (erratic menstrual cycles, insomnia, mood swings, anger outbursts, digestive issues, gastrointestinal dysfunction, low energy, anaemia, bloating, puffiness, headaches, recurring sinusitis, water retention) encouraged by a terrible diet at school and a bucket of emotional distress. I had lost myself and didn't know what I wanted anymore so I decided against attending university (in disappointment to my teacher's wishes for me). Within a year of being in London, I had a serious car accident. The trauma left me unable to stand for more than 4 hours in one go (I was 19 years old and very physically active beforehand) and I experienced the usual difficulties and frustration with receiving adequate help and treatment from the public health system to help me recover both physically and emotionally.
It was then that I was introduced to yoga at my gym. The practice with my wonderful teacher reconnected me with my own body and mind, it was fulfilling on a physical and emotional level, and the classes were supportive and full of like-minded people. I had opened an exciting door! I attended regularly with diligence and within a few months I fully recovered (instead of 3 years as predicted) from all symptoms of the traumatic road accident. I have never looked back and I still practice daily, it is my self-therapy, self-medicine and sometimes sets me straight and other times twists me up and gets 'it' all out! Through attending retreats and classes, I became closely acquainted with many different complementary practitioners and experienced first-hand the profound effects of acupuncture medicine for a long term sinus condition. Although I was fearful of needles, the treatment was painless and electrifying and after two treatments I was healed, and still am. With advice from my acupuncturist, I applied for a degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the best University for it and was accepted unconditionally.
I received acupuncture during this time and lived life according to traditional Chinese principles. My health issues were resolved and I feel stronger and more alive now than ever before. Although I felt like I was falling apart in every way, I now realise my health concerns were all part and one of the same issue, the dysfunction of the body and mind as a whole. I now enjoy freediving, rock climbing, walking, dancing, chanting, practicing yoga, making raw chocolate, experimenting in the kitchen, having fun with my toddler and husband and have many supportive friends and colleagues to help keep me on the path I want to be on.
After my degree, I attended further training for two months at two acupuncture hospitals in China to witness 'miracles'. I used acupuncture to treat and completely heal patients after a stroke, to help patients walk again after they were diagnosed with paralysis from a Road Traffic Accident, to resolve their facial paralysis, to heal children with brain damage… the list goes on. Patients were recovering from diagnosis that in the Western world were 'incurable'.
After 14 years of practice however, there is still more to learn. During my years of strong general practices in London and Brighton, UK, and Koh Samui and Koh Tao in Thailand, I have naturally been attracted to pregnant women and their babies. I have completed further training in these fields and have worked closely with pregnancy acupuncture for 7 years now. My training was further enhanced by my own personal experience of pregnancy, birth and being a mother to our now 3 year old son.
The drive for natural, safe, effective and personalised care drives me to do the best I can in the situation I am given. I am open to new ideas and methods of treatment and due to personal and professional desires for healing, I discovered a hands-on energy bodywork treatment called Zero Balancing and a mind based healing modality called Theta Healing. The combination of these two, in addition to acupuncture treatment I was receiving at the time, shook my world, and literally cleared my head and heart. The profound clarity I achieved during this time, resulted in a decision to move to a small island in Thailand, my dream.
I was free. To be who I really was. To practice medicine as a holistic therapist without the rules and regulations that I felt boxed into in the UK. As the only practitioner of natural medicine on the island, I treated everyone for everything, locals and expats. Their only other option on the island was a nurse, who you hope was properly qualified, or a two hour journey on a ferry to a medical doctor on the mainland. I used my common sense and trusted my inner wisdom for guidance. I spent 4 years on the island of Koh Tao, and in that period developed my own treatment technique based on the many non-needle techniques I had learnt since graduating, on feedback from clients and what I witnessed. I named it Structural Alignment for Body and Mind and took this therapy to an international wellness sanctuary in Koh Samui called Kamalaya, which I visited on a monthly basis and worked with international clients for over a year. It was a success and I continue to be in awe of the power of healing that we hold within us if given the optimum conditions
In the meantime, I became pregnant and a little blonde boy called Leon arrived. In order to meet health wishes for local expats and tourist, my Dutch husband, Patrick Meijer, a Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach and I founded Living Juices in Thailand, a healthy food and juice cafe. We held workshops on raw chocolate to begin with (followed by other type of food workshops and vaccine education) for children and adults to teach them simple way to change their diet and lifestyle for improved health.
In 2013 we received unfortunate news about the ill health of a family member and decided to leave Thailand to be closer to both our families. Living Juices was sold, and is still going strong, and we are rebuilding our lives with love and gratitude, with trust and confidence, that the journey that we are on, the path that we are following, is exactly the way it is meant to be.
